Chariot Glory Story
N. Sellamuththu opened the doors to the very first Chariot restaurant down Galle road in 1986. An ardent foodie, he wanted to offer the people of Colombo a taste of Jaffna cuisine, with dishes such as fiery mutton pal poriyal, succulent chicken palandi and spicy vendhaya kulambu. The menu soon expanded to include an array of delectable short eats and snacks such as their favoured Chicken Romania and unbeatable iced coffee.
Over the next few years the company grew to include a staff of 150 people working at multiple outlets and an outdoor catering unit. In the last three decades, Chariot has firmly established its place in Colombo as a beloved food haven for its loyal patrons. After changing hands once in 2010, the company was bought over in 2019 by the Asriel Group of Companies, a trend setter in the Sri Lankan food ingredients business.
Whether it’s the fragrant tandoori chicken puffs and mouth watering mutton rolls, scrumptious special lamprais (the biggest in Colombo), decadent chocolate eclairs and luscious cheesecakes, Chariot Bakery and Restaurant offers something to tease everyone’s tastebuds. With a carefully selected new menu comprising of a delightful mix of bakery items, local specialties and international delicacies, and a commitment to providing high quality, nourishing and tasty food, the Asriel Group of Companies intend to build upon the brand’s rich heritage and steer it into the future.

Message from Managing Director
As a trained chocolatier and an avid baker, overseeing the kitchen and the food production process isn’t just a regular job for me. Whether it’s locally caught (not canned) fish and fresh (not frozen) meats for our rolls and pies or top grade chocolate to glaze our eclairs, I take pride in using the freshest and best quality ingredients. No preservatives, no MSG and no premixes are used, rather everything is made from scratch - simply the magic of good produce cooked well to create something that I would happily eat with my children at the dinner table.
